Angel Technologies and
Raytheon Successfully Conduct
Record-Breaking Trial
of HALO Network™ for Delivery of
Wireless Broadband
Services via Airborne Platform
Mojave, CA (June 22,
2000) – In flight tests currently being conducted over Mojave,
Calif.ornia,
Angel
Technologies (AngelHALO.com), a privately held St. Louis-based company,
and Raytheon Company
(NYSE: RTNA, RTNB), with headquarters in Lexington, Mass., successfully
demonstrated that a stratospheric aircraft will be a competitive alternative to
deliver wireless, high-speed, two-way Internet and multimedia communications
services to major metropolitan areas.
Angel Technologies’ HALO-Proteus™ stratospheric aircraft is manned
by two pilots and flies at an altitude of more than 45,000 feet above the
Earth. The tests employ a Raytheon-designed broadband payload on the
HALO-Proteus™ aircraft and two portable ground stations. An RF switch in the payload switches the
circuits among four channels encompassed in two antenna beams pointed at the
ground stations.
Tests of the HALO Network are showing the viability of broadband
wireless point links at record-breaking speeds of 51.8 Mbits/second (OC-1
rates). To put the HALO Network speed in perspective, a 100,000-page document
transmitted over a 28.8 Kbits/second computer modem would require seven hours.
The HALO Network can transmit the same amount of data in just 16 seconds.
“Compared to wired alternatives, such as DSL, cable modems and
fiber access, airborne broadband communications can reach customers wherever
they may be in the metropolitan area and offers a wider range of services,”
said Marc Arnold, CEO Angel Technologies.
When the aircraft begins limited commercial service in 2001,
pilots will fly in eight-hour shifts, operating three aircraft per metropolitan
market to deliver seamless 24-hour communications. Users will access the HALO
Network through a small receiver dish installed at home or work.
“Raytheon Company has been
working with Angel since 1998 and our efforts have produced a completely new
and innovative means of delivering high-speed broadband communications
services,” said Bruce Snider, director of the company’s Electronic Systems New
Ventures organization.

The HALO Network will deliver a broad array of advanced,
data-intensive services including video/audio streaming, video conferencing, electronic
transaction processing, high-speed Internet access and large data file
transfers, CD-quality audio and video entertainment, interactive distance
learning, telemedicine, e-commerce and virtual private networks or Intranets.
Angel Technologies Corporation, the
owner of the HALO-Proteus aircraft, is using proprietary High Altitude Long
Operation (HALO)ä technology to
deliver metropolitan wireless services city-by-city. Augmenting terrestrial towers and orbiting satellites, Angel’s
HALO aircraft are designed to fly in fixed patterns in the stratosphere above
major cities to deliver metropolitan wireless services at low cost, with
increased flexibility and improved quality of service. Working with corporate partners, Angel will
deliver a variety of fixed and mobile wireless services including voice, data
and video.
The HALO-Proteus aircraft is built by
Precision Castparts Corporation (NYSE: PCC), a
40 percent shareholder of Angel
Technologies, and parent company of Scaled Composites and Scaled Technology
Works. The HALO-Proteus prototype has
been in flight tests for two years and flew non-stop between the U.S. and
France where it made its international debut at the Paris Air Show last year.
Positioned 10 miles above metropolitan areas, the HALO-Proteus aircraft and its
payload create a beam pattern covering an area comparable to several hundred
cellular towers. The HALO-Proteus will provide the commercial communication
industry a reliable alternative infrastructure that can be deployed instantly,
even when terrestrial infrastructure is missing or incomplete. Applications
that will benefit most from the availability of airborne deployment will be new
broadband data services in developed countries and wireless telephony services
in the developing world. Additional information about Angel Technologies and
the HALO Network can be found at the website, www.AngelHALO.com.
